Three Main Levels of Course Offerings
While there are Eight Levels of Programs listed, there are just three main levels:  300hr, 700hr and 1500hr.
If you wish to join at the 100, 200 or 300hr level, you will be taking classes from the catalog of courses of the 300-hour level until you meet the requirements (although you may make some substitutions of higher level course numbers, the majority of your training should be from 300hr level courses.)

If you wish to join at the 500 or 700hr level, you will be taking classes from the catalog of courses of the 700-hour level until you meet the requirements (although you may make some substitutions of either lower or higher level courses, the majority of your training should be from 700-hr level courses.)

If you wish to join the Therapeutics Training at the 900, 1200 or 1500hr level, you will be taking classes from the catalog of courses of the 1500hr level until you meet the requirements (although you may make some substitutions of lower level courses, the majority of your training should be from 1500-hr level courses.)

Course Offerings

Courses below are labeled at three different levels across the various categories.  The categories are the required fields of study for each training program (anatomy and physiology, teaching methodology, etc.)  The three levels labeled are the 300-level (eg AP301 General Anatomy), the 700-level (eg AP701 Intro to Kundalini) and the 1500-level (eg, AP1501. Orientation & Organization of Human Body).  In general, classes at the 300-level are for students enrolled in Level 1, 2 or 3, classes at the 700-level are for students enrolled in level 4, or 5 and classes at the 1500-level are for students enrolled in Level 6, 7 or 8.   However, any higher level course may be substituted for a lower level course.  

Transferability of previous courses or yoga related programs for equivalency consideration and approval must be submitted  in writing to the Program Director.

Please note that these courses are being added and updated (and deleted) as the Training Programs are continually evolving.  This list is by no means all-inclusive and an updated listing of course offerings will be published approximately bi-annually.

The number in parenthesis after the course title is the usual number of hours for this workshop, however any given workshop may be more or less hours.



Anatomy & Physiology

AP 301. General Anatomy (2)
Skeleton & Basic Muscles.  General anatomical terms (e.g., lateral, proximal, superficial, etc.) the difference between a tendon and a ligament, internal versus external rotation, supination and pronatation, major muscles and bones, especially spinal column.

AP 302. Anatomy of Spine (2)
Curves of spinal column, vertebrae in each, parts of a vertebra, kyphosis, lordosis and scoliosis, flexion and extension.

AP 303. Anatomy of Chakras (2)
Definition of, location, color, sound, Sanskrit and English name, element, energetic function.  Basic alignment at each area.  Also, see JJ’s DVD on Alignment of Chakras.

AP 304. Alignment Principles for Lower Body (Hips, Legs, Feet)  (2)
Alignment of pelvis including hip points (ASIS), sacrum, hip joints, knee movement affected by hip movement, weight of foot affected by placement of hips. See JJ’s DVD on Alignment of Chakras. 

AP 305. Alignment Principles for Upper Body (Shoulders, Arms, Hands) (2)
Alignment of collar bones and shoulderblades and the affect that alignment has on joints of arms/wrists, weight on hand in poses with hands on floor.  See JJ’s DVD on Alignment of Chakras.  

AP 306. Anatomy of Upper Body (Neck & Shoulders) (2)
Knowlege bones associated with Neck & Shoulders, Arms, wrists and hands and major muscles associated with these areas.  See Alignmnent of Upper Body above.

AP 307. Anatomy of Lower Body (Hips, Legs, and Feet) (2)
Bones associated with Hips, Legs & Feet and major muscles associated with these areas as well as ligaments of knee.  See Alignment of  Lower Body above.

AP 308. Glands & Organs (2)
Basics of endocrine system and the hormones associated with each gland/organ as well as the chakra each gland/organ is associated with and the major ailments affected by a dysfunction of that hormone or gland/organ.  

AP 309. Introduction to Chakras & Nadis (2)
Basics of the energetic anatomy of the chakras, 3 major nadis: sushumna, ida, pingala, affects of  kundalini as taught by TKV Desikachar. Prana & Apana vayus and their affect on kundalini, the breath, poses, etc.

AP 310. Scoliosis (2)
Basics of Scoliosis, definition of, and how to help a student that might be in pain from scoliosis.  

AP 311.Therapy in Classroom (aka:Therapeutics Basics) (2)   
Basics of some of the major issues found in the classroom: back, knee, neck pain, etc.  and liability issues with trying to help students.  

AP 312. Women’s Issues & Yoga (2)
Basics of major phases of a woman’s life and how yoga might be adjusted during these phases.  

AP 313. Chakra Studies or Energy Anatomy (2 +)
Details of the Chakra System including:  Sanskrit name, location, color, element, smell, sound, gems, what that chakra governs, ailments, emotions, healing the chakra, pranayama, bath and activities, foods, visualizations, depression and clothes associated with each.

AP 314. Ayurveda (12)
Basics of including definition, doshas, gunas, prakriti and purusha.

Location of the major bandhas of the body and how to perform these bandhas.

TM 704. Touch/Marmas (2)
Pre-requisite TM303.  Discuss the use of touch in the classroom or with a private client for therapeutic application only.  Marma points are acupuncture points that can be used especially those on the feet to help students.

TM 705. Demonstrations (2)
Pre-requisite TM304.  Discuss and practice giving good demonstrations, positioning the demonstration in the classroom for the best viewing of all students and how to make sure the demo is effective.

TM 706. Seeing Poses (2)
Pre-requisite TM305. Discuss and practice seeing poses to know how well the student is balanced and steady and comfortable in a pose.

TM 707. Teaching Poses (2)
Pre-requisite TM 306.  Discuss how to teach various poses in the classroom.

TM 708. Practice Teaching Poses (2)
Pre-requisite TM 307.  Practice teaching a variety of poses in front of your peers.

TM 709. Lesson Plans (4)
Pre-requisite TM 308.  Practice designing lesson plans for correct flow of a class including transition poses, rest poses, crown poses, goal poses and counter poses.  May also include planning a pranayama and meditation course to follow the asana portion.

TM 711. Teaching Pranayama to Advanced Beginner’s or in Workshops (2)

TM 712. Teaching Meditation to Advanced Beginner’s or in Workshops (2)

TM 713. Conducting a Private (2)

Learn what the Vedas are and where yoga originates and the other major philosophies fom India and how there has become much confusion between some of these philosophies as they’ve been blended into yoga and confused the teachings and our understanding of yoga today. 

PH 314. Introduction to Bandhas, Mudras, Mantras, etc. (1)

PH 315. Introduction to Hatha Yoga Pradipika (Kriyas) (1.5)
This ancient text offers much to yogis, learn the basics of this text and in particular the cleanses.
 
PH 316. Yoga of the Mind: Cit & Citta (1)
Yoga is really a practice of understanding and therefore calming one’s mind.  This workshop teaches us the basics of this understanding.

PH 317. The Kleshas (1)
Kleshas and Obstacles to our practice are necessary to understand before one can overcome them.  This workshop teaches us what to look out for in our practice. 

PH 318. The Pancha Mayas (1.5)
Learn the Five Veils of our being. 

PH 319. Intro to Ayurveda (1)
Learn definition of Ayurveda, doshas and simple application to asana.


PH 701. Pancha Vayus (1)
Introduction to the Five (pancha) Winds (vayus) as a philosophy as introduced in the Upanishads.

PH 702. Introduction to Marmas (1.5)
Introduction to these vital energy centers on the body (this class is theory only, see also TM704)

PH 703. Introduction to Nadi Pariksa (1.5)
Pre-requisite: AP314, PH319.  Introduction to the ayuvedic way of taking the pulse to analyze a client’s general health including diagnosing the ayurvedic dosha. (this class is theory only, see also AP707)

PH 704. Introduction to Prakriti & Purusa (1)
These two opposites Prakriti (matter) and Purusa (spirit).in yoga philosophy will be discussed. 

PH 705. Body, Mind, Spirit Connection applied to Asana (1)
Pre-requisite: PH704.  Given the opposites of matter and spirit discuss how and why the mind is often combined to form the triad (Body,mind,spirit) often used in yoga philosophy.

PH706. Yoga Sutras (8)  (2hours on each Pada)
Pre-requisite: PH301, PH306, PH316, PH317.  Delve into the Yoga Sutras more and discover each Pada (chapter) has a focus and what that focus is and how it is incorporated into the whole of the Yoga Sutras.

PH707. Mahabharata & Gita (2)
Pre-requisite: PH304, PH307.  Discussion and reading from these texts.

PH708. Ramayana (2)
Pre-requisite: PH308. Discussion and reading from this text.

PH709. Sanskrit Part 2 (ASI or Cynthia) (10)
Learn the devanagari (Sanskrit writing) while pronouncing the characters and words of Sanskrit.

PH710. Upanishads (2)
Pre-requisite: PH305. Discussion and reading from these texts.

PH711. Who’s Who Among Hindu Gods & Goddesses (2)
Although these Hindu Gods and Goddesses have become confused and blended in with yoga philosophy over the centuries this class discusses how these Gods and Goddesses are NOT a part of yoga and that there is NO diety for yoga.

PH712. Kleshas & Antarayas (2)
Pre-requisite: PH317.  Discuss the obstacles to yoga as presented in the Yoga Sutras Padas 1 and 2 and how to overcome these obstacles.

PH713. Geranda Samhita (1)
Pre-requisite PH315.  Discuss this text and its similarities/differences to the Hatha Yoga Pradipika.

PH714. Siva Samhita (1)
Pre-requisite PH315.  Discuss this text and its similarities/differences to the Hatha Yoga Pradipika.

PH715. Yoga Taravelli (1)
Pre-requisite PH315.  Discuss this text and its similarities/differences to the Hatha Yoga Pradipika.

PH716. Cit & Citta (2)
Pre-requisite PH316. Yoga’s practice of calming the mind is discussed in detail.

PH717. Kleshas (2)
Pre-requisite: PH 317. Kleshas or Obstacles to our practice are necessary to understand before one can overcome them.  This workshop teaches us what to look out for in our practice.

PH718. Yoga Yajnavalkya (1)
Pre-requisite PH315.  Discuss this text and its similarities/differences to the Hatha Yoga Pradipika.

PH719. Ayurveda (in-depth) (24) with Brendan Feeley or Dean Campbell
Pre-requisite: PH319 and AP314.  Vata, Pita, Ka’pha diets and habits are discussed in detail and how to keep the dosha-s from going out of balance by changing your diet and habits with the seasons.



PH 1501. Pancha Vayus & Therapeutic Application (2)
Pre-requisite: PH701.  The Five (pancha) Winds (vayus) help to regulate movement throughout the body to keep our energy moving and vital, increasing our vitality.  

PH 1502. Marmas & Therapeutic Application (2)
Pre-requisite PH702 and TM704. Learn how these vital energy centers on the body use can lead to healing various ailments and emotional conditions.

PH 1503. Nadi Pariksa & Therapeutic Application (2)
Pre-requisite: PH 703.  Learn how to use the ayurvedic way of taking the pulse to assess a client’s general health including the vitality of the major organs and winds (Vayus).

PH 1504. Key Concepts of Yoga Therapy (2)
Learn what yoga therapy is and the difference between being a teacher of yoga and a Yoga Therapist.

PH 1505. Relationship between Care Seeker & Care Provider (2)
Discuss the beginning of healing starts with the relationship between the seeker of health and the one that helps provide the avenue toward good health.

PH 1506. Difference between Healing & Curing (1)
Discuss whether yoga heals or cures and what the difference is.

PH 1507. Definitions of Disease & Health (1)
Discussion on what dis-ease of the body, mind and/or spirit is and when is this tri-ad not in dis-ease.  What is health?

PH 1508. Pancha Maya Model (Bird Model) (1)
Pre-requisite PH318.  These Five Veils of our being as introduced in the Upanishads through the bird model (Taitiriya Upanishad) and how this model can help us assess a client to help their healing.

PH 1509. Framework of Yoga Therapy (2)
Pre-requisite PH1504, PH1505, PH1506 and PH1507.  The pre-requisites for this course make up the framework for Yoga Therapy.  This course will learn how to apply theory.

PH 1510. Vyuha Model (Heyam-Hetu-Hanam-Upayam) (2)
This model sets the foundation for healing, from the symptom/cause to the end-goal (healing).

PH 1511. Tools of Yoga Therapy (2)
Pre-requsite: TM718.  Discuss the unlimited upayam (tools) for yoga therapy.

Practicum

PR 301. Practice Teaching w/Faculty Member
Prepare for teaching students by practicing first with your peers and with a Faculty Member present.

PR 302. LAB-Practice Teaching: Free Class  (Critiqued by Faculty)
Pre-requisite:  completed all the Teaching Methodology Coursework requirements.
Teach with a Faculty observing and receive constructive feedback from the Observing Faculty.

PR 303. LAB-Practice Teaching: Subbing or otherwise teaching.
Pre-requisite:  completed all of the Teaching Methodology Coursework requirement. Begin subbing classes or otherwise teaching on your own. 

PR 304. LAB-Apprenticeship: Observing or Assisting Faculty (45)
At any time during your training work with a Faculty member to begin observing and/or assisting them in their classes as an apprentice.  It is highly recommended that you observe first for approximately 12 weeks or 18 hours and that this class be a beginning level class.  After your initial observation period, you may then (with permission of the Faculty begin assisting and perhaps even teaching.  Permission from Faculty is required before entering the classroom.


PR 701. Practice Teaching w/Faculty Member
Practice teaching students with your peers and with a Faculty Member present to help guide you to be the best you can be.

PR 703. LAB-Practice Teaching: Subbing or otherwise teaching on own
